The Discovery Channel envisioned a platform that would provide a space for those affected by cancer to connect. They wanted to create a unique and beautiful virtual space for people who were battling cancer, for those in remission or for patients' families to engage with one another. Discovery wanted a highly immersive site that would allow users to upload poems, pictures, video and audio to tell their stories. To create this solution, Discovery came to EffectiveUI.
EffectiveUI took Discovery's vision for the platform and elevated it to include stunning visuals and interactive multimedia applications. The team had a tight deadline to meet, as the project launch was scheduled for 10 weeks after the start date. With only two and a half months to complete the platform, EffectiveUI remained focused on delivering a completely user-generated application that would exceed expectation.
Though the project's scope was daunting, the EffectiveUI team succeeded in going above and beyond expectations and creating a platform that impressed Discovery in terms of both functionality and design.
The dynamic site allowed various types of multimedia to be easily uploaded, displayed, searched and filtered. As with all EffectiveUI projects, the design and development teams collaborated on the Cancer Collage to create a project that is not only functional and scalable but is also engaging and aesthetically powerful.
The platform is a compelling, immersive and interactive multimedia application that provides an artistic outlet for those affected by cancer. Holding true to Discovery's initial vision, the application allows people from across the globe to demonstrate their experiences and connect with one another. In order to connect people who share similar experiences, the application allows visitors to search for people based on age, gender, state, current treatment, primary cancer relation, primary cancer type, cancer journey and treatment location.
In the first month alone, more than 25,000 visitors participated in the Cancer Collage and thousands of individual stories and personal contributions appeared. The Cancer Collage has positively impacted thousands of people worldwide directly or indirectly affected by cancer. Visitors contacted The Discovery Channel and EffectiveUI expressing their appreciation for the site and to share how much it meant to them personally.
David Smith, director of interactive marketing at Discovery Channel, said, “We came to EffectiveUI to brainstorm some new interactive project initiatives. The team's innovative approach took our ideas to a whole new level. They designed rich and engaging experiences and brilliantly executed on the development. EffectiveUI just gets it.”
Trisha Creekmore, executive producer for Discovery.com, said, “It was a pleasure to work with the EffectiveUI team on the Cancer Collage. Their ability to collaborate and build on our ideas, as well as keep the project focused and deliver it on deadline, was extremely impressive.”Work with Us
